Aiming for a career in architecture, I photograph because it often enables me to be more creative and free from constraints than I can be in my architectural design work. I mainly shoot architecture, landscapes, and abstract images. I have learned that it is easy to look but not actually see, and through my photography and the close examination of the subject that this medium requires, I feel that I properly take in my environment in great detail. In my photography work I question my own and other people’s perception about the scene or subject in the photograph, using concepts of scale, colour, and perspective as the tools for this.

Digital manipulation plays an important role in the creation of many of my photographic works, allowing me to vastly change the mood of an image with relative ease. It also enables elements of the image to be added or removed, further blurring the boundaries between fantasy and reality where appropriate.

I strongly feel that a photograph should reveal something about the subject (what the picture is of) and the photographer …… but perhaps more importantly, the relationship between the two. I photograph both architecture and landscapes because of my fascination with both subjects and my desire to better understand them.

I think my work is contemporary because of its bold simplicity, both in terms of composition and colour. My work has been described as “giving a new visual lease of life to taken-for-granted scenes.”

Many things inspire my photography including music, painting, architecture and the stunning views and vistas we are lucky enough to have surrounding us. Through my photography, I attempt to explore the world around me, and in doing so am provided with a permanent record of my response to it.
